Becoming a social worker may open you new roads for more career opportunities than any other type of liberal arts major. Social workers need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree (BSW). However, more specialized jobs require a Master’s in Social Work degree (MSW). For many adults, obtaining their degree through online courses is an ideal way to balance school, work, and family.

Auburn University Main Campus, the highest-ranking social work school in AL, has a total student population of 24,602 and is the 115th highest ranked school in America.

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work offers a major leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work. The Bachelor of Arts in Social Work degree is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

A person with a degree from an accredited institution is eligible to take the examination for licensure as a baccalaureate-level social worker (LBSW) and apply for advanced standing in social work graduate programs.

The University of Alabama is a public coeducational institution that began admitting students in 1831. The School of Social Work was established in 1965 by the Alabama Legislature.

The MSW Program was first accredited in 1969, and the first class received master’s degrees the same year. The MSW program was re-accredited in 2011 for the maximum period of eight years. The undergraduate program in social work was approved in 1969 and placed within the School of Social Work in 1970. In 1974, the undergraduate program was first accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

The BSW program was re-accredited in 2011 for the maximum period of 8 years.

The doctoral program began as a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program in 1975 to prepare teachers and researchers for the social work profession. Over the years, recognizing the need for increased emphasis on research within the profession, the faculty substantially revised the program. As of 1992, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) has been conferred. The doctoral program is affiliated with the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education (GADE) in social work.

The School of Social Work currently offers the degrees of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Master of Social Work (MSW), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

The School of Social Work at the University of Alabama offers a Masters in Social Work degree to qualified students. There are two ways for students to enter the program. Those that hold a bachelor’s degree in social work can enter the Advanced Standing Program which is slightly shorter than the standard two-year program. All students take classes in areas such as social works research, human development, social welfare policy, and models and methods of social work practice.

Alabama A&M University

Alabama A&M University offers degrees at many levels in a variety of subjects. The Department of Social Work sits under the College of Arts and Sciences. It offers degrees at both the Bachelors and the Masters level. This school offers a low student to teacher ratio which is fantastic for those that want to enter the Masters in Social Work program.

The School offers different ways to earn this degree. For those that hold a bachelor’s degree in social work, they have the option of entering the advanced standing program. Others usually go through the full two-year program. During their studies, students take classes in areas such as social work policy, social work practice, family, and child welfare policy, and needs assessment and evaluation.
