Missouri State University is the second largest university system in Missouri. This institute is also a premier center of higher education in the southwest Missouri region. Missouri State University offers several programs.

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program in Missouri

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program prepares students with the professional knowledge, skills and values needed to become beginning generalist practitioners. The BSW program offers a comprehensive major that requires 61- 62 credit hours of sequenced course work in human biology, psychology, sociology, economics and social work and 6 credit hours of approved social work electives for a total of 73 to 75 credit hours.

After the completion of the general education requirements, social work requirements and electives to bring total credit hours to the University’s requirement of 125, students eventually earn BSW degrees. However, if students desire more advanced training, they should apply for a Master of Social Work degree.

MSW program at Missouri State University

It’s very important to underline that the MSW program at Missouri State University prepares students from an advanced generalist perspective. After the completion of this degree, you’ll have all necessary knowledge and skills needed to enter into a full range of advanced social work roles, including direct practice, assessment and triage, program development and/or management and various administrative positions. MSW program at Missouri State University is fully accredited by Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

The program provides electives in such areas as rural health, legal/forensic social work, substance abuse, domestic violence and child and family play therapy. Exact offerings vary from year to year but are designed to provide several areas of interests for students in the program.

MSW classes meet once a week and are mostly offered in the evenings. There are several courses that are offered on-line or in a mixed format that combines classroom and non-classroom methods and meet less than weekly.

The coursework and field training prepares MSWs for eventual licensure as clinical social workers in their respective states.
