The Jane Addams College of Social Work is a division of the University of Illinois at Chicago. This school provides academic programs that prepare competent and effective social work professionals. The College offers the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, a Certificate in Evidence-Based Mental Health Practice with Children, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work (PhD) degree.

The Master of Social Work degree program prepares students for advanced social work practice in the following fields: mental health, child and family services, community health and urban development, and school social work practice.

The MSW Program has:

  • Advanced Standing: The Advanced Standing Program Options is for applicants who have earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a CSWE accredited program within the last six years. These students typically complete the Master of Social Work Program within two semesters or two semesters and a summer.
  • Full Time: Full-time students complete the degree in two years.
  • PM Program Option, is also available. Students have a chance to extend the usual first year of full-time study over 2 years, with classroom courses scheduled in the late afternoon and evening. Students in the first year of the full-time program and for the first 2 years of the PM Program are assigned a class schedule by the Jane Addams College of Social Work. You should keep in mind that in their third year, PM students must register for full-time study in the regular day program.

The Certificate in Evidence-Based Mental Health Practice with Children prepares students with advanced training in evidence-based practice with this targeted population.

Ph.D. Program in Social Work

The doctoral program is designed for individuals planning careers in social work education, research, or administration. It provides for two broad research tracks: social planning, policy and administration, and social work practice scholarship within which a more specialized area of individualized study is selected.

Students are prepared for leadership in one or more of the following careers:

* Teaching in colleges or universities
* Conducting and directing research
* Administrating large-scale social welfare programs
* Analyzing and advising on social policy

The Certificate in Evidence-Based Mental Health Practice with Children prepares students with advanced training in evidence-based practice with this targeted population.

The School of Social Service Administration (SSA) at the University of Chicago

The School of Social Service Administration (SSA) at the University of Chicago is one of the world’s leading schools for the training of social workers.

The School of Social Service Administration (SSA) prepares students to become leaders in the field of social work. SSA offers graduate work leading to both the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees.

The Master’s Program prepares students to enter advanced professional practice. The curriculum includes: the core curriculum, which offers all students during their first two quarters a solid introduction to the fundamentals of direct practice with individuals, families, organizations, and communities and to the fundamentals of administration and policy; an elective concentration in either clinical practice or social administration; and field placements to supplement both the core and the concentrations.

The Doctoral Program offers specialized study at a more advanced level. Each student’s program unique and features course work, independent study, and research leading to the dissertation.
